Welcome" Acrylic on wood panel, original size 48x48"
This image was commissioned by Red River College Polytech by the School of Indigenous Education. They requested a piece of artwork that would relate to all Indigenous students at the college - First Nations, Metis and Inuit. The lower half shows the creatures that represent the Seven Sacred Teachings:
Bear - Courage
Sabe - Honesty
Wolf - Humility
Eagle - Love
Bison - Respect
Turtle - Truth
Beaver - Wisdom
The woven sash that spans the middle, and the floral stylized "beadwork" represent the Metis culture.
The polar bears, inukshuk and northern lights are icons of the Inuit. Surrounding the circle are various Indigenous words and syllabics saying "Welcome"!
